The Lake District Via Ferrata at Honister Slate Mine

For a quick adrenaline fix it is difficult to beat a trip across Britain's only Via Ferrata. Set in the Lake District, on the side of Honister Pass and above the beautiful valley of Buttermere this is a truly unique experience. We highly recommend this activity for groups seeking excitement and something a little out of the ordinary.

There are two different courses to test yourself on, the 'Classic' course which follows the ancient miner's cliff-edge footpath high on Fleetwith Pike, or the 'Xtreme' course which is more of everything! This includes the "Burma Bridges" which is a wire bridge suspended 2,000 feet above the Valley floor and a 66foot vertical cargo net to finish off!

In 2016, we now offer the 'Climb in the mine' - an underground Via Ferrata course! If heights are not your strong point, but you enjoy the physical challenge of climbing, then have a look at this brand new activity!

Meaning 'Iron Way' in English the multi-award winning Honister Via Ferrata is a series of exposed scrambles linked by metal ladders, wire bridges and cargo nets leading to one of the finest viewpoints in the country.

Clipping into a cable which follows the route ensures your safety across the Via Ferrata and allows you to enjoy the committing moves and exposure as you work your way up to the summit.

The process of a Via Ferrata is not dissimilar to rock climbing or mountain scrambling. If you like these - you'll love this!

What happens on a Via Ferrata session?

The Via Ferrata at Honister Slate Mine gives you a choice of two trips, either the classic which follows a natural line up the side of the mountain; or the more intense 'Xtreme' trip, which involves crossing a ravine by a Burma Bridge before ascending a series of walls and slabs to reach the top of the mountain.

A decent level of fitness and a good head for heights are prerequisites for this outdoor activity! Our instructors will explain how to use the equipment and will guide you throughout the via ferrata, helping and encouraging you as necessary.
