Climb in the Mine at Honister

And now for something completely different... Climb in the mine is a completely unique activity that can be found nowhere else in the world. Set inside one of the few operational slate mines in Britain the Climb in the mine is an underground Via Ferrata course travelling deep under the Cumbrian fells.

As you climb the steep walls and traverse across underground chambers on wire bridges you can only admire the audacity of the early miners who created this underground environment. Indeed, even as you travel through the chambers it is hard to imagine the lives of the 19th century miners carving out the world famous Borrowdale Slate with their hand tools, before transporting it down the valley by foot or packhorse to the nearest markets.

Meaning 'Iron Way' in English a Via Ferrata is a series of metal ladders, and wire bridges with a metal safety cable running along the length of the route. Clipping into the cable ensures your safety across the Via Ferrata and allows you to enjoy the committing moves and overhanging ladders as you work your way up and through the manmade chambers and passages of the mine.

The climb in the mine combines the physical challenge of climbing with the excitement of caving and as an added bonus has the unique distinction of being an all weather activity!
